Your results
If you are successful in the exam you will receive two documents: a Statement of Results and a certificate. Universities, employers and other organisations you apply to may ask you for either of these documents as proof of your English language skills.

This page contains information about how to interpret your exam result and how your result can be verified by third parties who may wish to check the validity of your Cambridge English result.

The Cambridge English Scale

Cambridge Assessment English will start uses a way of reporting results for our exams that will provide you with more detailed information about exam performance – the Cambridge English Scale.

The Cambridge English Scale is a range of scores used for reporting the results of Cambridge English exams. It is built on the existing results reporting and years of research, and is designed to complement the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The Cambridge English Scale allows for more straightforward results reporting across the exams and better meets the needs of our exam users, including candidates, teachers, universities and immigration departments.

Benefits:
  • More detailed results – candidates receive a score for each skill (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) plus Use of English. They also get an overall score for the exam on the Cambridge English Scale.
  • Straightforward and consistent – results across the exams will report on the same scale. Scores on the Cambridge English Scale will replace the existing standardised scores and candidate profile.
  • Easy to compare performance – the alignment of the exams to the CEFR, to IELTS and to each other is clear. Results on the scale also give a greater insight into candidate progression from one exam to the next.

Setting your requirements

Setting your English language requirements is simple using the Cambridge English Scale.

What level of English do you need and in which exam(s)?

It is important to consider both the level of English needed for your courses and which exam is most suited to your needs. This will depend on the level of study and the subject(s) being studied.

Each of the Cambridge English exams is targeted at a different level of the CEFR, which means they assess a candidate on a wide range of skills and knowledge at that level. The context of questions is also appropriate to the level being assessed, with higher levels having a greater academic focus.

As a guide, the following exams are recommended for the different levels of study:

Foundation/pre-sessional
Cambridge English: First

- Targeted at CEFR Level B2
- Reports on the Cambridge English Scale between 122 and 190
Undergraduate & postgraduate
Cambridge English: Advanced

- Targeted at CEFR Level C1
- Reports on the Cambridge English Scale between 142 and 210
Postgraduate
Cambridge English: Proficiency
- Targeted at CEFR Level C2
- Reports on the Cambridge English Scale between 162 and 230

What Cambridge English Scale score?

The Cambridge English Scale makes it easy to:
  • specify the overall score you need
  • specify minimum scores for the individual skills.
You can use the table to the right to ensure that the Cambridge English Scale score you ask for is at the same level as your CEFR requirements.

Results enquiries
If you are unhappy with the result of your exam and you wish to query your results, please discuss this with us. If you are still unhappy, we can submit a Results Enquiry to Cambridge on your behalf.

There are two stages to this process:
  • Stage 1 - A full clerical recheck. This must be requested no more than 30 days after the issue of the result. Cambridge will check that all of the marks on your exam papers have been correctly counted, to make sure there have been no mistakes when calculating your final grade. At this stage, your exam papers will not be re-marked.
  • Stage 2 - A full re-mark. If you are still not satisfied after completing Stage 1, a full re-mark will be arranged for you. This includes a re-marking of the written papers (including review of the Listening paper where relevant, but does not apply to any Speaking test component). There is no stage 2 remark for Key (KET) and Key (KET) for Schools.
A re-mark of the Speaking Test is not available. The Speaking Test is assessed on the day by 2 Cambridge English Speaking Test Examiners. Speaking Test Examiners are trained yearly and are externally monitored on a regular basis in order to ensure that candidates are assessed objectively and in line with the Cambridge English marking guidelines.

Cambridge English will not show or give access to candidates' completed exam scripts.

The Results Enquiry must be submitted by the exam centre on your behalf and we will guide you through the process. There is a charge for each stage, which will be refunded should the enquiry result in a change in grade. Please note that if there is a change in the result but not a change in grade the payment will not be reimbursed. (Grade = A, B, C, Pass, Pass with Merit, Pass with Distinction). Please contact us for information about the costs and time-scales for a Results Enquiry.

Further information regarding Results Enquiries and Appeals can be found here.

Please note that your grade could go down as well as up as a result of a Results Enquiry.

There are deadlines for requesting Results Enquiries, so you will need to contact your centre as soon as possible after receiving your results.

*It is not possible for Speaking Tests to be re-marked.
